How to Duplicate a Page or Post in WordPress in 2020
You might know the pain of copying and pasting paragraphs and images back and forth between browser tabs if you have ever found yourself needing to duplicate a post or page in WordPress. This is not only inefficient, but it can lead to errors as well.
Fortunately, there are many different ways that you can make a copy of a WordPress post or page quickly. The solutions available vary in complexity and use, so you’ll almost certainly be able to find one that fits your specific needs.

It’s true that in publishing the same post or page twice, there is little sense. In fact, this can lead to negative effects on the visibility of your site, which we will discuss shortly.
There are, however, several other reasons why you may wish to duplicate a WordPress post or page.
First, you may want to create a template for your articles so that your style and formatting across your website remain consistent. This can make it look more professional and authoritative on your site.
By allowing you to reuse complex layouts or other features that would take a lot of effort to recreate, duplicating posts may help you save time on content creation.
Without touching the original version, you can also use duplicate posts to test changes to your content. Think of the secondary copy as your post’s small-scale staging environment.
A / B testing is another reason that you might want to duplicate a page. If you make very slight changes between versions, this strategy works best, so making an exact copy of the landing page or other content that you want to test is usually the easiest way to go about it.
Finally, to move content from one site to another, duplication is also sometimes used. You may be undergoing a redesign, rebranding, or other overhaul of the website and want to ensure that your old content is maintained.
How SEO Impacts Duplicate Content
There is a common misconception that it will result in a Google penalty for publishing duplicate posts. While this is not strictly true, your SEO could be negatively affected by having multiple live copies of the exact same post or page on your site.

For this reason, (except for situations like A / B testing), we do not recommend publishing live versions of duplicate posts. Instead, to streamline your workflow or otherwise enhance your site, this process should be used.
How to WordPress Duplicate a Page or Post (5 methods)
Actually, there are several ways of duplicating your posts and pages on WordPress. Which technique is best for you will depend on your objectives. Here are five possibilities that you might try.
Method 1: Use a Plugin for Duplication
For the majority, using a plugin is the easiest way to duplicate content. If you are planning to use duplicate posts to create templates or for A / B testing purposes, this solution is ideal.

Very similar functionality and settings are provided by both plugins. Using Duplicate Post, we’ll demonstrate this method, but for Duplicate Page, the process is essentially the same.
First, install the plugin on your WordPress site and activate it:

Then, navigate to Configuration > Duplicate Post:

Here, you can specify the elements to be copied from the original post to the duplicate. You can also choose which types of posts to allow duplication and which user roles are allowed to make copies of your content.
Navigate to the Posts section of your WordPress dashboard once you’ve configured your settings and saved your changes. Two new actions, Clone and New Draft, you will now see:

By clicking Clone, a new draft will be created, which is a duplicate of the post you have chosen. The New Draft option does the same, but in the WordPress editor, the secondary copy opens. You can make any necessary modifications there to tweak the duplicate post.
In the admin toolbar, you will also see a Copy to a New Draft option:

When editing a post in the WordPress editor or viewing it on the front end of the site, you can use this button to duplicate it.
Method 2: Clone your Migration Content
While the Duplicator plugin allows you to bulk-clone posts and pages, plugins such as Duplicate Post and Duplicate Page allow you to make copies of several pieces of content to move them to another site:

If your site gets compromised, this plugin is also sometimes used to create website backups that you can use to restore your content. If you want to use your existing site as a template for a new one, or if you are undergoing a redesign or rebranding, the Duplicator is a useful solution.
It will add a new link to your dashboard sidebar once you install and activate it on your site. Navigate to Duplicator > Packages to get started:

To copy the content of your site, Duplicator will then walk you through the steps. You’ll need to name your package, select where to store it and what to include in it. If you only want to copy your posts, except for wp posts and wp postmeta: exclude all tables under Archive > Database
To establish a Duplicator package, select the wp posts and wp postmeta database tables.
Once the package has been developed by Duplicator, download it to your computer:

Method 3: Using WooCommerce Duplicate products
Maintaining consistency across your product pages is important if you are running an e-commerce site. You’re in luck if you want to duplicate your WooCommerce products to create templates or variations. The WooCommerce plugin allows you to do this out of the box.
To reveal the Duplicate option, navigate to Products and hover over any item:
Clicking on it will create a new product draft that is the same as the original one. This copy can then be edited to create a new product page that matches the styling and formatting of the old one.
Method 4: Copy Block Editor Content
You may be familiar with its Copy All Content option if you use the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg). By opening the editor’s settings, you can access it:

By clicking this option in the menu, the content of the post will be copied immediately and a confirmation will be displayed.
Your content can then be pasted into another post. The main downside to this technique is that none of the metadata of the post, such as its title, taxonomies, permalink, and featured image, is copied.
Although it might take some time for a plugin such as Duplicate Post to set up initially, if you plan to make copies of your posts with some frequency, it will ultimately be a more effective solution.
Method 5: By editing your theme, create a ‘Duplicate’ option
By editing your theme, the last method we recommend to duplicate a post or page in WordPress is to create a ‘Duplicate’ option. A little more advanced is this technique. However, it can seamlessly integrate duplication functionality with your site if you execute it properly.
First, you’ll need to create and activate a child theme. This will ensure that you can update your theme safely without losing your custom duplication functionality.
Then, in case the worst happens during the process of code editing, make a backup of your site. You can safely move on to modifying your files once both of those steps are done.
The file that you need to edit will be called functions.php. You can find it via FTP and FileZilla in your children’s theme folder, or simply use the built-in WordPress Theme Editor:

Just save the file. In the Posts and Pages sections of your dashboard, there will now be a duplicate option:
The Custom Duplicate option is created by editing a file called functions.php.
